  Model elements: the baseline is admission into named engineering branches, not an open bachelor structure.

  The same page links the detailed B.Tech. and Dual Degree curriculum documents by cohort.

  Model elements: common first-year or early-stage foundation supports only limited programme mobility by itself, so I keep this below major/minor level.

  The B.Tech. ordinances describe change of branch as possible only at the end of the first semester, based on first-semester performance, vacancies and branch strength limits.

  The same rules say Dual Degree students are not eligible to change to the 4-year B.Tech. programme.

  The regulations allow B.Tech. students to take extra courses in later semesters within a maximum EXT credit limit, subject to conditions such as CGPA and Dean approval; EXT courses appear on the grade card and count for CGPA.

  Model elements: this is the decisive source for programChoice 2. There is branch mobility, but it is early, competitive and capacity constrained, not a major/minor or double-major model.

  The 2024 B.Tech. curriculum gives branch-wise credit categories including basic sciences, engineering sciences, humanities and social sciences, branch core, department electives and unallotted credits.

  Examples include large unallotted credit blocks: Aerospace Engineering has 54 unallotted credits, Biological Engineering has 57 and Computer Science and Engineering has 63.

  The Aerospace plan includes humanities and social sciences electives, department electives and an optional B.Tech. project that can be done in any department, with outside-department projects counted against unallotted credits.

  Model elements: this is the decisive evidence for courseChoice 3. Students have broad internal elective and unallotted-credit space, but the evidence is still inside IIT Madras.

  The official exchange page says IIT Madras has student exchange agreements with more than 100 institutions and that enrolled students may spend a semester at a partner university with credit transfer back to IIT Madras.

  The same page says course selection and exchange participation require approvals from the Faculty Advisor, Head of Department, Academic Section and Dean.

  Strict cross-registration review: I do not count this as courseChoice 4. It is semester exchange with multiple approvals, not normal access to one or two external courses alongside IIT Madras study.

  The B.Tech. ordinances describe credit transfer for students visiting universities abroad under exchange programmes.

  They state that the IIT Madras transcript lists IIT Madras courses with grades and separately records the total external credits earned elsewhere without grades; such credits count toward the minimum credits required for the degree.

  Model elements: this confirms that exchange credits can count, but it also confirms why the evidence is not a strict cross-registration case for courseChoice 4.

  The official NIRF 2025 PDF reports 3,589 students in UG [4 Years Program(s)] and 1,186 students in UG [5 Years Program(s)] in the Total Actual Student Strength table.

  The catalog stores the sum of those two rows, 4,775 students. The IIT degree model does not use the specialist level, so specialist enrollment is stored as 0.
